Are you suffering from short-term anal fissure? You can attempt to heal it at home. Generally it takes 4-6 weeks to cure the fissures at home. Besides, there are also several medications and surgical processes to heal the fissure if the home remedy fails to work for more than 6 weeks.

An Anal fissure is a small oval shaped tear in the skin that lines the opening of the anus. Fissures cause severe pain and bleeding with bowel movements. It is a common condition affecting all age groups but mostly found in young adults. Both men and women can equally be affected by it.

The patients suffering from anal fissure will notice bleeding from the anus and severe pain during and after bowel movements. The pain may last for a few minute or several hours after defaecation.

Fissures are usually cause by disturbance to the inner lining of the anus. Patients with tight muscles are more likely to develop anal fissures. Other common reasons behind the formation of fissures include: hard or dry bowel movement, loose stools and diarrhea.

Not all anal fissures require a surgery. They can sometimes be treated at home as well. Generally, the time taken to cure the fissure at home is – 4 to 6 weeks. Pain due to irregular bowel movement reduces in a couple of days with the help of home remedies.

Sitz bath is the most common home cure to treat the fissures. In this process, you dip your buttocks in warm water for 20 minutes. This procedure is repeated twice or thrice a day. Apart for this, a patient must also incorporate more fiber and fluids in their diet. The diet will unstiffen stool and prevent constipation. You can also use stool softeners and Laxatives to get rid of the fissures, but these are only used under proper medical guidance.

If home remedies fail to show any major results for more than six months, it is highly advised to look for medications from licensed physicians. Some of the medicines used to cure long term fissures are:

1). Nitroglycerine cream: it helps reducing the pressure in the sphincter (internal muscles of anus). Patients should use pea-sized dot of cream at a time, and not more than this. Too much usage of this cream can result in lightheadedness, headaches, and in extreme cases, patients may even faint due to drop in blood pressure.

2). Nifedipine and Diltiazem are other medicines to reduce the pressure on the internal anal sphincter thus relieving the patient from pain.

3). Botox is also used as a helpful anal fissure treatment. A fixed amount of botox is inoculated into the sphincter which causes muscles in the sphincter to paralyze, thus relieving tightness on the fissures.

As a last alternative, doctors may also recommend surgical treatment for anal fissure. Lateral Internal Sphincterotomy is one of the favored treatments useful in reducing the pressure and relieving the pain.

Singapore accommodates innumerous hospitals and clinics that arrange for a complete colorectal service as well as general surgical service to the patients worldwide. The hospitals in Singapore believe in a multi-disciplinary approach in the treatment and provide holistic care to patients.
