Pratik was started in 1987 by hemendra k. varma as a proprietary firm called management productivity systems. Mr: hemendra had by then worked 15 years in the industry( 9 years in Voltas, Thane, 4 years in G. Claridge, Mumbai & 2 years in Jenson &Nicholson, Calcutta).
In 1992, it was incorporated as a private limited company under the name — pratik management productivity systems private limited.
The basic thrust for this activity came from the observation that any talk of productivity in industry inevitably meant or was understood to mean labour productivity Hence all attention of management experts, owner-managers, Chamber of Commerce and even academicians was on how to increase labour productivity by greater automation or more stringent policing or smarter annual wage agreements tying down the union to increased production norms or, finally, more aggressive industrial action by way of wage cuts, suspensions and lockouts.
A closer and dispassionate examination, however, revealed that the management had a far greater effect on productivity than labour. If a particular worker refuses to work or works slowly on a machine, he only affects the output of that item or that machine. But if a manager does not plan properly or does not take a right decision, or simply does not decide in time, he can affect the output of an entire shift or factory.It is this understanding that led to the realisation that if there has to be any meaningful improvement in productivity in our industries,then the focus must shift from labour productivity to
management productivity hence, our name — pratik management productivity systems. pratik means and we wish to become the for improving management productivity through systems.

Established as the 5S Institute of India, in January 2005, it was not only the first such Institute in India, it was also the first Institute in the world for 5S Training & Consultancy. Subsequently, it has been re-christened as The 5S Institute, in 2008.
While 5S, as a topic, is covered by many other institutes & institutions, (e.g. The Kaizen Institute, various TPM / TQM Facilitators / Consulting Organisations) there is no other body dedicated to 5S training/consultancy. It continues to remain the only 5S Institute / Institution till date.
